The Role of the Coastguard

 

The role of H M Coastguard is defined by Act of Parliament as laid out in the Coastguard Act 1925

 

HM Coastguard is responsible for the initiation and co-ordination of civil maritime search and rescue within the UK maritime search and rescue region. This includes the mobilisation, organisation and tasking of adequate resources to respond to persons either in distress at sea, or at risk of injury or death on the cliffs or shoreline of the UK.

Holyhead Coastguard:

● Responsible for all maritime Search and Rescue and other emergency situations, incidents and calls for assistance in its operational area

● The District that we cover in North Wales is from the Dee estuary in the North East to Friog on the Cardigan Bay coast in the West

     ● Provide guidance and information to all coastal             and maritime users within the district

 

     ● Duty Coastguard plan and co-ordinate search              and rescue response under the Coastguard              Act  1925. Tasking as required Coastguard              Rescue Teams, Rescue Helicopters, RNLI              Lifeboats, other Emergency Services assets,              or any other available units

       Coastguards working in Operations Rooms,         maintain a high degree of Local Knowledge         in order to maintain their competency level         to perform there duties in:

 Search and Rescue Co-ordination

 Maritime and Land Based Search Planning

 Operational Communications

 Coast Rescue

 Chart and Map Work  

 General Maritime

 Counter Pollution  

 Meteorology
